Modern Kazan
Kazan is attractive with its architectural monuments. Here you can see Orthodox buildings with elements of Muslim ornament, or just Russian or Tatar buildings.
The most impressive sightseeing is local Kremlin. Its building began in 1553 after occupation of Kazan by Russian troops. But its erection was very slowly. The plan of Kremlin resembles the human step, left by unknown giant on the bank of Kazanka River. The total square of Kremlin is 15000 square meters. The Kremlin wall had 13 towers, nowadays there are only 8.
Syuyumbike tower

It’s a Kremlin pearl. Its silhouette is often used as an architectural emblem of city. Its nib 59 metres high you can compare with a needle. The name of the tower associated with a name of Kazan queen Syuyumbike the favorite one of people. The legend tells when Ivan the Terrible knew about her beauty he suggested her to become his wife. Syuyumbike rejected his suggestion and it was the reason to occupy Kazan. Just to save the city the queen agreed to get married Ivan but asked him to build the highest tower in the city. In seven days the tower had been built, Syuyumbike went up to the tower to say “Good bye” to the people and jumped down.
Blagoveshchenkiy Cathedral

The unique monument of 16 century, the ancient one among cathedrals of Middle Volga Region. It was built in 1556-1562.
Koul- Sharif Mosque
 
Not far from the Blagoveshchenskiy Cathedral there was eight minarets Mosque Koul-Sharif. Its figure had influence on image of Vasiliy Blissful Cathedral in Moscow. The Mosque was destroyed after occupation of Kazan by Ivan the Terrible. But this image was so strong in memory of Tatar people and 5 years later the decision of rebuilding was took.
Bauman’s Street
 
Bauman’s Street is the oldest street in Kazan. Now it’s a walking street where you can see a lot of shops and entertaining buildings, theatres and many architectural buildings. Here you can also see a big watch, a carriage and fountains.
Peter-Paul’s Cathedral
 
It was built in 1723-1726 by merchant Mikhlyaev in memory of Peter the first staying in Kazan. Peter-Paul’s Cathedral is the valuable monument of architecture of Russian barocco the beginning of 17 century.
Kazan State University
It was an architectural building during 1825-1837. Nowadays there are a lot of faculties and thousands of students.
Thanks to university in 19 century Kazan became one of the authoritative centers of orientalism in Europe during long time.
Saint Varvara Church
It was built at the end of 18 century, after it was rebuilt and was decorated in Pseudorussian style. One of the remarkable details in its history is Shalyapin’s participation in church chorus.
